BiodiversityBiodiversity means ‘the variety of life’.
We regularly carry our surveys to monitor biodiversity in and around school. This helps us plan how we should manage the school grounds to increase biodiversity.
Surveys that we have carried out include:
Pond invertebrates – When our pond was first put in, we monitored the species present every week for a year (including during the holidays). This showed us how species colonise a new habitat. Whilst we don’t survey it every week anymore, we do still keep a check on the species and numbers present.
Bats – In 2007 we carried out a bat survey of the Canterbury area. Our results gave us a good idea of the types of habitats that different species like.
Small mammals – Every now and again we survey the school grounds for small mammals (mice, voles and shrews) using mammal traps.
Trees – We planted a whole range of native tree species in Langton Wood. Keeping an eye on them will help us predict the effect of global warming on Kent wildlife.
To encourage birds we put up bird boxes around the school site.
