Sex Education

In accordance with the 1993 Education Act Simon Langton Grammar School for Boys is required to provide Sex Education to all our students. This is consistent with our overall aims as a school to educate the whole student and to foster personal development, which will prepare students for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life.

Aims

Our Sex Education programme will provide knowledge, develop personal skills, and foster attitudes which will empower students to manage their relationships in a responsible and healthy way. They should be able to make sensible, informed choices having considered physical, spiritual and social implications.

Specifically it should enable students to: -

- View sexual behaviour in the context of a loving, stable relationship and be prepared to enter such a relationship based on mutual respect.

- Receive information and discuss sexual matters in an unembarrassed way using appropriate vocabulary.

- Counteract myths, rumour or false assumptions about what is 'normal' behaviour at a particular age.

- Develop communication and decision making skills and raise self-confidence so they can face issues and deal with social pressures.

- Understand different types of personal relationships.

- Be aware of their developing bodies and emotions and to respect themselves and others.

- Receive information about reproduction, contraception, sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV/Aids

- Recognise the physical and emotional risk of sexual activity.

- Be aware of the appropriate sources of information and help.

Delivery

Years 7-9 - P.S.H.E. lessons (equivalent to one period a week);

Years 10-11 - Gen. Ed. Double period: one part of the year.

Withdrawal

Parents have a legal entitlement to withdraw their children from all or part of this programme. If you are considering this course of action you may like to share your concerns with us, otherwise the Deputy Head (Pastoral) should be informed in writing. The school will comply with this request until it is revoked in writing. In the event of withdrawal parents may wish to discuss the feasibility of using school material at home.

The school cannot provide alternative tuition for students who have been withdrawn.
